He lost in the eighth-final round in 1976 but reached the quarter-finals in 1980, losing against upcoming Olympic champion Shamil Sabirov from the USSR. At both the 1979 and 1981 Europeans Geilich won silver medals and at the 1982 Worlds took a bronze medal.
Domestically, Geilich won East German titles in 1973, 1975–77, 1979–81 and 1983. He later became a youth coach in Frankfurt on Oder. As his mother left East Germany for the West when he was a child, he was raised by his grandparents. After re-unification he became jobless, had problems with alcohol, and worked in odd jobs.
