East German welterweight boxer Siegfried Mehnert was eliminated in the third round at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Domestically, he won national titles in 1982-83, and 1986. He also won the European title in 1985 and 1989, and added a silver in 1987. At the World Championships Mehnert won a silver medal in 1989. He later enjoyed a coaching career at Karlsruher SC.
