Biography

Edmond Vanwaes won gold in the eights at the 1910 European Championships on home water in Oostende. In the eights, he also claimed two Belgian Championships with the Koninklijke Roeivereniging Sport Gent (1912, 1919). Two years later, Vanwaes was a member of the Belgian coxed four that competed in the 1912 Olympic regatta. After defeating Roklubb Købnhavn in the heats, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Norway’s Kristiania Roklub. With the same crew Belgium won silver behind Switzerland at the 1912 European Championships in Genève.

After finishing his active career, Vanwaes joined the board of directors of his club. In 1942, he was arrested by the German Gestapo and endured severe cruelties during the interrogations in Ghent. Vanwaes was deported to Germany and died of deprivation in the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp in occupied Alsace.
