At the 1980 Moskva Olympics middleweight boxer Manfred Trauten lost his quarter-final bout against upcoming silver medalist Viktor Savchenko from the Soviet Union by a referee stoppage in round two. In 1987 Trauten won his only East German national title in the light-heavyweight class. He later became a boxing coach and moved to Köln after German reunification.
