Harry Klein began his rowing career as a teenager, becoming a South American vice-champion at the age of 18. Klein represented the Flamengo club in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to being a mainstay in the Brazilian national rowing team throughout the 1960s. In 1960 he won gold in both the coxed fours and eight at the Luso-Brazilian Games in Portugal, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1960 Roma Games he was part of the crew in the coxed fours; however, the Brazilian team was eliminated in the repêchage round.
Two years later Klein won gold in the coxed fours at the South American Championships in Argentina, before winning silver in the coxless fours a year later at the Pan American Games in São Paulo. Klein then formed a strong partnership with Edgard Gijsen, with the pair winning multiple titles in the double sculls in South America. They competed in the same event at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where they won the B Final to place seventh overall. Three years later Klein and Gijsen won gold in the double sculls at the Pan American Games in Cali. Later that year the pair finished sixth in the A Final at the European Rowing Championships in Denmark. After Gijsen’s retirement from rowing, Klein competed for a few more years in the single sculls before he also retired from the sport.
