West German light-heavyweight boxer Markus “Cassius” Bott twice failed to reach an Olympic quarter-final. At the 1984 Los Angeles Games he lost on a 4-1 decision to the eventual champion Ante Josipović from Yugoslavia. At Seoul four years later, he lost to the eventual silver medalist Nurmagomed Shanavazov of the Soviet Union, by a 5-0 decision. In 1985, Bott won the silver medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships.
He turned professional in 1989 and in 1993 beat Tyrone Booze of the USA to win the WBO cruiserweight world title. Bott later had several other jobs, was divorced, and lived off a disability annuity.
