Light-heavyweight and later heavyweight boxer Wolfgang Gruber reached the quarter-finals at the 1976 Montréal Olympics but then lost to upcoming silver medallist Sixto Soria from Cuba by knockout in the first round. Gruber stayed as an amateur boxer during his whole sporting career and never turned professional. Overshadowed by Peter Hussing in West Germany, Gruber never won a national title.
