Jorge Contreras was 10-years-old when he began rowing at the Arturo Prat club in Chile. During his career Contreras represented the national rowing team and competed at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He competed in the coxed pairs with Juan Carmona and Eusebio Ojeda, but the Chilean crew had a poor Games, finishing last in their heat, repêchage, and semi-final. Three years later Contreras had a better performance, winning bronze in the coxless fours at the Pan American Games in Chicago. He continued his long association with his rowing club, eventually becoming their President.
