Norbert Nieroba

West German boxer Norbert Nieroba lost his first light-middleweight bout at the 1988 Seoul Olympics against the eventual Canadian bronze medalist Ray Downey. From 1985-89, Nieroba won the national title in this class and in 1992 in the middleweight division. Nieroba won 210 of 260 amateur fights.

In 1995, Nieroba turned professional and became national super-middleweight champion in 1996, and in 2001 won the light-heavyweight title. In 1998, he won the World Boxing Union (WBU) title against South African Sybrand Botes but lost it the following year to Nordin bin Salah of the Netherlands. By profession, Nieroba was a trained gas and water plumber, employed by the municipality of Ahlen.
