Herbert Schilling

German light-welterweight boxer Herbert Schilling from Frankfurt lost his first round bout at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was one of the favorites, but lost a 3-0 points decision against South African Alexander Webster. The previous year Schilling was the first West German European Champion after World War II and the same year he won his first national title and defended it in 1952.

Schilling was a trained carpenter before he turned professional in 1957 and boxed until 1963 without winning anything of merit. After his retirement he coached young boxers for several years. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf by West German president Theodor Heuss in 1951.
