Welterweight boxer Reinhard Skricek won a surprising bronze medal at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. He clearly won against José Vallejo from the Dominican Republic by a 5-0 decision in his first bout. He won his second match against Luigi Minchillo from Italy by a 4-1 decision, then defeated future professional champion Mike McCallum of Jamaica by a 3-2 decision. Skricek lost his semi-final against Venezuelan boxer Pedro José Gamarro, also by a 3-2 decision. Skricek was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
In 1968, 1973 and 1976 Skricek lost in the finals at the West German nationals, but never managed to win the title. He turned to coaching after the Montréal Games and was also a soldier in the West German Bundeswehr.
