German boxer Thomas Ulrich won the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the light-heavyweight class representing Germany. He was German national champion in 1994 and, the following year, he won a bronze medal at the World Amateur Championships and the silver medal at the Military Worlds, losing to Russian Yevgeny Makarenko.
After the Olympics, Ulrich turned professional and won the EBU European Championship three times in 2002, 2004 and 2007. In 1998, he became German Champion, and in 2000 the WBO International Champion. Ulrich was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award in 1996. Later, he lost all his money from his professional career and was given the chance to work as a boxing coach at Berlin. Ulrich retired in 2012.
