Prince Amartey was a two-time Olympian, competing at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics. In Munich, he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division. Amartey also competed at World Armed Forces Games and the All Africa Games, winning gold and bronze for Ghana at the latter.
However, in 1974 Amartey was dismissed from the Army due to mental health issues. He then worked as a cleaner at his local YMCA in Ho, while living in poverty. In 2021, the Ghana Armed Forces set up a business to help Amartey, after the high command of the forces heard about his story. In the same year, Amartey suffered a stroke, which left him incapacitated.
