The son of the late Major C. J. Boyle, Richard Boyle was educated at Bradfield College in Berkshire, before going up to Trinity Hall, Cambridge. At University he won his rowing Blue as cox to the 1907 and 1908 Boat Race winning crews. Also, in 1908, he won a bronze medal with the Cambridge eight at the London Olympics. Boyle served as a captain with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in World War I and won the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
