Tim Kirk attended Lutterworth Grammar School the same school as fellow 1968 Olympian, and the double 1964 silver-medallist, John Cooper. Kirk was a cross-country runner at school, and it was not until he went to London University to study dentistry at Guy’s Hospital in 1964 that he was persuaded to become a cox to the hospital rowing team. He then progressed to the University first eight in 1966. Kirk coxed the London crew that beat Oxford to win the 1968 Grand Challenge Cup at Henley, and a few months later the same eight went to the Mexico Olympics.
In 1984 Kirk was appointed coach to the Bristol University Boat Club Club. A keen cyclist in his retirement, Kirk took part in his first major cycling event in 2018 at the age of 72 when he entered Scotland’s largest closed road event, the Etape Loch Ness.
