Richard Knight reached the semi-final of the Thames Cup with Moseley Boat Club at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1957. They were hoping to reach their first final since 1895 but lost to the eventual winners, Princeton University of the USA, by two-thirds of a length. Having rowed in the coxed fours at the 1959 European Rowing Championships at Mâcon, France, Knight was in the Molesey four that represented Great Britain at the Roma Olympics the following year, but they were eliminated in the repêchage.
Knight was also in the Molesey eight at the Europeans at Praha two years later and in 1962 they represented Britain at the World Championships at Lucerne. He followed that with two bronze medals (coxed fours and eights) at that year’s British Empire and Commonwealth Games at Perth, Australia. Knight later became a coach at Moseley where his son Ian proved to be a fine rower and sculler.
