Peter Thomas was stroke to the London University eight that won the coveted Grand Challenge Cup at Henley in 1968. A few months later, the same crew represented Great Britain at the Mexico Olympics.
The youngest of four sons of Dr. Clifford Thomas, Peter attended St. Edwards school Oxford, before going to St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School at the University of London. Thomas’s brothers David, Richard, and Hugh were also excellent oarsmen and, like Peter, enjoyed success at Henley. The family also had a connection with the Harrodian RC, the rowing club of the famous Harrods retail store.
At the time of the 1968 Olympics, Peter was serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He later became the medical officer of the Henley Regatta and the British international rowing squads. In 1988 Thomas was elected a steward at the Henley Regatta.
