A one-time teacher, and then deputy city editor for the Daily Telegraph, David Walker was a member of the Thames Rowing Club. He was cox to Howard James and Mark Scott in the coxed pairs at the 1948 London Olympics at Henley. The three qualified for the Games by winning the last Olympic trial, also at Henley, by beating the Leetham Rowing Club and Oxford University Boat Club squads.
