East German rower Jutta Behrendt could not participate due to the Soviet-led boycott at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. However, she then won the gold medal in the single sculls at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1983 and 1986 she won the World Championships in the single sculls. In 1985, 1987, and 1989, she also won the quadruple sculls world title, and also won silver medals in 1981 and 1982.
At the East German nationals, Behrendt won nine titles, and also obtained nine second, and six third places. After her active career, she became a member of the NOC of the former GDR and, after re-unification, of the NOC of Germany, until 1997. By profession, she became a graduated rowing coach. In 1995, she moved to Norway to take over the job as the country’s first female Chief National Coach. Since 1997, she also ran a cosmetic studio at Holmenkollen near Oslo.
