Rower Helma Lehmann was a member of the East German gold medal winning coxed eights at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. In 1973 she won her first medal at the Europeans, winning silver, and the following year, won the World Championships gold with the eights. In 1975 she also won the coxed fours world title. Domestically, she won two national titles, in the eights (1974), and coxed fours (1975).
