Rower Christine Scheiblich was the first of East Germany’s great female scullers. She won the initial Olympic gold medal in women’s sculling at Montréal in 1976. She also won the first four single sculls world titles in 1974-75 and 1977-78. She won the East German title in those same years.
Scheiblich retired in 1978 and married world championship luger Ulrich Hahn. She trained as a typewriter mechanic but later studied physiotherapy, and after re-unification founded her own practice in Dresden.
