Kirsten Wenzel rowed on the gold medal-winning East German coxed fours crew at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. In 1978 she was World Champion and in 1979 runner-up, also with the coxed fours. That same year, the crew won the East German nationals. In 1981, with another coxed fours crew, she won the national title and a silver at the Worlds. She won bronze medals with the eights at the Worlds in 1982 and 1983.
Wenzel married swimmer Rainer Strohbach, although they later divorced. By profession, she was a schoolteacher in Berlin.
