East German rower Peter Kersten won the bronze medal as a single sculler at the 1980 Moskva Olympic Games. In 1976, he had won the Youth World Championship and then moved to the quadruple sculls. With this crew he won both the East German national and World Championships in 1979 and 1981, respectively. Kersten was a trained mechanical engineer and repair mechanic.
