Hartmut Schreiber was an East German rower who was a member of the coxed eights crew that won the bronze medal at the 1972 München Olympics. The boat lost the silver medal by only 6/100 seconds against the US. In 1968 Schreiber was a substitute but did not compete. In 1970 he won the silver medal at the Worlds with the coxed pairs. He also earned a silver medal with the coxed fours at the 1971 Europeans.
By profession, Schreiber was a trained toolmaker and studied political sciences. He then led the Berlin training center for swimmers and was taken over by the Berlin Criminal Police after re-unification.
