Rower Jürgen Thiele won the gold medal at the 1980 Moskva Olympics with the East German coxless fours. In 1981 he finished fourth at the World Championships with the eights, and in 1983 was fourth again with the coxless fours. In 1984 Thiele won the East German national title with the coxless fours. Thiele was a trained electronic mechanic and worked with the Leipzig main station until re-unification. He was later employed by the Technical Control Board (TÜV) at Leipzig.
