At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics German rower Micaela Schmidt was a crew member of the eights that finished eighth. In 1990, she won the last former GDR title with the coxed eights and a bronze medal at the World Championships.
In 1993 Schmidt won her first title in re-unified Germany with the coxed eights. In 1994, she won two national titles with the coxed eights and the coxless fours, and with the eights, Schmidt also became World Champion. In 1995, she added a third national title with the coxed eights.
