German rower Sybille Schmidt was a member of gold-medal-winning quadruple sculls crew at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and they were subsequently awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Schmidt won the former GDR quadruple sculls titles in 1987, 1989, and 1990. She was also world champion in 1989 and 1990 for the former GDR, and in 1991 for re-unified Germany.
