Rower Inge Althoff was a member of the West German coxed eights in 1988 at the Seoul Games, finishing seventh as the only crew not reaching the final. Four years later at Barcelona she partnered Stefani Werremeier in the coxless pairs, now representing re-unified Germany, and they won the silver medal.
Althoff and Werremeier also won a medal of each colour at the World Championships. They won bronze in 1989, gold in 1990 and silver in 1991. After the Barcelona Games, Althoff married Swiss rower Beat Schwerzmann and represented Switzerland. In 1993, Althoff and Werremeier were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Althoff also won five national titles in the coxless pairs, in 1988 with Elke Markwort, and from 1989-92 with Werremeier.
