Biography

Bene Gusztáv was a welterweight boxer for BVSC and Budapesti Lokomotív between 1930 and 1950. He was also known as Bene I. He won two Hungarian individual championship titles, the first in 1939 and the second nine years later. He also won two team championship titles (1937 and 1950). Between 1937 and 1948 Bene boxed 11 times for the Hungarian national team.

At the 1948 London Olympics he faced Gyula Torma, the future Olympic champion, in the first round, but was defeated by him and thus finished unplaced. From 1949 onwards he also worked as a coach for his affiliation. After the 1956 revolution he left Hungary and settled in Australia.
