West German rower Manfred Fitze was a member of the coxless fours at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The boat was eliminated in the repêchage semi-finals, after finishing third behind second-placed qualifiers Italy by over nine seconds. Fitze rowed in the coxless fours for ETUF Essen, was runner-up at the West German Championships in 1955, and won the title in 1956. In 1956 the boat also won the bronze medal at the European Championships.
