Biography

László Bene was introduced to boxing when he was 8-years-old. At first Bene competed for the MPSE team, before transferring to Csepeli Vasas. From 1944 to 1950 he won the individual national championship in heavyweight six times, and from 1945 to 1949 he led the Csepel team to victory five times in the national team championship.

Between 1943 and 1952 Bene competed for the Hungarian national team 14 times. He was already included in the 1948 Olympic squad, but in the end he was not chosen to travel to London. As a member of the national team, he achieved his greatest success in 1949, becoming a European champion. One year later, he won a silver medal at the World University Championship, but unfortunately at the Helsinki Olympics he was eliminated in the second round. Bene stopped boxing in 1955 and then worked as a locksmith at the Csepel Pipe Factory. He died young in 1977, at the age of 53.
