Frithjof Henckel was a member of the West German eights at the 1972 München Olympics that finished a disappointing fifth. Four years later, he finished fourth with a different eights, with only Reinhard Wendemuth and Bernd Truschinski remaining from 1972. Henckel won both the West German coxed and coxless fours titles in 1972. He added the eights title in 1974 and the following year won the eights again, and the coxed fours. He won a third consecutive eights title in 1976. This turned out to be his last national title.
