Rower Klaus Riekemann was a member of the gold medal winning coxed fours at the 1960 Roma Olympics, for which the crew received the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest West German sports award. Riekemann was 1959 West German coxed pairs champion. He also won European titles in 1958 and 1959 together with non-Olympians Hans-Joachim Berendes and Hans-Dieter Maier. In 1961 Riekemann added another West German title in the coxless fours.
