Imre Harangi started his sports career as a boxer with Herminamezei AC in 1929 and five years later moved to MÁVAG SK. In 1930 and 1931, he won the youth national championship, and between 1933 and 1938, won the Hungarian lightweight championship six times.
Between 1933 and 1938 Harangi was a member of the national team 22 times. In 1934 he finished second at the European Championship. In 1936 at the Berlin Olympics he was seriously injured in the semi-final, when the Dane Poul Kops butted Harangi in the forehead, his left eyebrow cracking open. In the final, he entered the ring with a big bandage on his head, and was bleeding, but still won the gold medal. In the same year he was selected to the European Team against the United States.
Harangi retired in 1938 and was trained as a pilot, which had been a childhood dream. He fought in the war and underwent a forced landing in 1941, but his kidneys were severely damaged. In April 1945, he was taken prisoner-of-war in Austria, where he was employed as a coach due to his boxing skills. In 1945, he was able to return to Hungary and worked as a youth coach at MÁVAG SK.
