Géza Ütő’s biggest moment on the international rowing scene came at the 1956 European Championships, where he won silver in the men’s coxless fours, alongside Csaba Kovács, Rezső Riheczky, and Zoltán Kávay. A few months later, this quartet competed in the same event at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where they were eliminated in the round one repêchage. Between 1950 and 1956, he won eight Hungarian Championship titles.
After the Olympics, Ütő returned to Hungary after the Games, despite the Hungarian Revolution, in order to reunite with his fiancée, and together they fled to Austria, and eventually Australia. There he earned a degree in architecture and remained in the country working in his chosen profession until 1992, when he finally returned to a post-communist Hungary.
