László Szabó started his sports career as a boxer and goalkeeper of MAC. In 1926 he started rowing for BEC and three years later he moved to Pannonia. Between 1931 and 1943 he won a total of twenty Hungarian championships. He was an eight-time champion in eights, five-time champion in the coxed fours, and a four-time champion in the coxless fours. In 1943, he was the Hungarian champion in the coxed and coxless pairs.
Between 1931 and 1938 he was the member of the Hungarian national team. With seven medals, he was the most successful Hungarian rower in the European Championships. He won the European championship in the coxless fours in 1932, and the eights in 1933 and 1935. He finished third in 1931 and second in 1938 with the eights. With the coxed fours he was third in 1933, and with the coxless fours he was second in 1934 and third in 1937. He also took part in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he finished fifth with the eights. Before World War II he worked as a bank clerk. After the war he left for Australia.
