Imre Mándi started boxing in 1929 in the colors of VOGE in Dombóvár. He achieved his first significant result in 1933, when he finished second at the National Youth Championship and first at the Budapest Championship. In 1935, at the age of 19, he won the national title. The following year, Mándi moved to FTC. With his new affiliation he won four individual (1937-40) and two team (1940-41) championships.
Mándi was selected for the Hungarian national team 49 times. In 1936 he finished fifth at the Berlin Olympics, only to be defeated by the upcoming winner Sten Suvio of Finland. In 1937, he placed second at the European Championships. After the European Championships, Mándi traveled to the United States as a member of the European national team. Because of his Jewish heritage, Mándi was called up for forced labor in 1943 and died in circumstances that are still unclear.
