Biography

Gyula Szabó was a Hungarian boxer who competed in the bantamweight division. Szabó first started to train in 1954 and won several Hungarian championships and international tournaments during his career. He was selected to compete at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, first defeating Guillermo Velásquez of Chile before losing to Sulley Shittu of Ghana. He retired from the ring in 1972 after winning a silver medal at the Hungarian championships. Szabó later worked as the coach of the national team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics where the Hungarian team won three bronze medals.
