Rowing for Virtus Lagunare Murano, Umberto Ragazzi competed from the late 1960s until the middle of the next decade. Domestically, he was four times Italian single sculls champion (1968, 1972, 1974-75) and also obtained good results internationally. The highlight of his career was at the 1974 World Championships at Lucerne where he placed fourth. At that time Ragazzi joined up with Silvio Ferrini in double sculls, looking towards the 1976 Montréal Olympics, where they won the B final for seventh place, defeating the USA crew.
After finishing his sports career, and graduating from Padova University, Ragazzi taught physical education for several years and was a rowing coach for various rowing clubs. He also worked as a lampworker and glass blower.
