István Turu

István Turu started boxing at a young age in Törökszentmiklós. In 1980, he won the junior Hungarian championship title at 54 kg. That year he won a gold medal at the Youth Friendship Competition, then a tournament for Socialist countries. Leaving the junior age group in 1981, he finished second at the national championship as a senior. He won his first Hungarian championship title in 1983 in lightweight, and in 1986-87 defended that title.

Turu was first selected for the national team in a dual meet against Poland in October 1981. As a member of the Hungarian national team, he competed in the 1982 World Championships and the 1983 and 1985 European Championships. At age 26, he boxed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he reached the second round. Turu quit boxing in the early 1990s and began working as a coach. In 2008 he became one of the coaches of the Hungarian national team and helped the team in several international competitions.
