Amsterdammer Johan Burk was a member of his home city’s De Amstel rowing club when he won an Olympic bronze medal in 1908. Burk later left the Netherlands to work in railway construction in the South African province of Natal but eventually settled in the USA. After serving in the US Army during World War One he worked for decades as a clerk and bookkeeper in Brooklyn, New York.
