Biography

As a dentistry student in Groningen, Bram Tuinzing joined student rowing club Aegir. Although he had completed his studies by 1972, he still rowed in the Aegir eight that won the Dutch championships, thus qualifying for the München Olympics. There, the boat narrowly missed out on a place in the final, placing fourth just 0.6 seconds behind a qualifying spot. Eventually, the Dutch eight ranked ninth.

Just eight days after competing in the B final, Tuinzing got married. The newlyweds immediately departed for Winnipeg (Canada), where Tuinzing became an assistant at the university clinic. His stay in Canada, by which he also avoided the military draft, lasted until 1974. He then returned to work at the Amsterdam University Medical Center as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. As a professor there, he studied the psychological effects of jaw surgery and the impact of different facial types on the result. He retired in 2015.
