In 1953, Reginald Douglas formed a successful coxless pairs rowing partnership with Bob Parker. Together, they won the gold medal in that event at the 1954 British Empire Games and defended their title at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. They also competed in the double sculls at the former edition, where they captured the silver medal behind Australians Merv Wood and Murray Riley. In-between, the duo represented New Zealand in the coxless pairs at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals. Domestically, the duo won six national titles together, with Douglas earning a seventh in the single sculls in 1951.
