Rowers Herbert Kesel and Klaus Hahn had bad luck in the coxless pairs at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In the semi-final of the repêchage, they were in a comfortable lead ahead the US and Polish boats when Hahn collapsed and could not carry on rowing. The following year the pair finished second at the German Championships.
