Paul Meyer

Paul Meyer was born in Germany, but grew up in Zürich. A member of Aviron Romand Zürich (ARZ), he first gained notice after defeating reigning national champion Hans Jakob Keller in the single sculls event at the Swiss Rowing Championships in Luzern in 1951. Meyer was named to the Olympic team to compete in Helsinki, Finland in 1952 where he competed in the men’s single sculls event and was eliminated in the semi-final repêchage. He continued competing in national and domestic rowing events in Switzerland representing ARZ until around 1954.

Meyer was a medical doctor specializing in gynecology and obstetrics, having trained under Drs. Alfred Brunner, Hans von Meyenburg and Ernst Held at the University of Zürich. In the 1950s, he operated a practice near the banks of the Limmat in Zürich. Meyer was married to Hilda Fürst and had two children.
