Sassari’s Gavino Matta won the national amateur flyweight title in 1934 for the first time, repeating in 1935-36. Matta won a silver medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and then in 1937 won bronze at the European Championships.
Matta turned pro, débuting on 22 January 1938 with a knock-out of Luigi Costantini. Matta won the Italian flyweight title in December 1945 by knocking out Antonio Morabito, lost it in November 1946 to Mario Solinas, and then regained it in May 1947. Matta fought through 1948, ending with a professional record of 24 wins (6 by KO), 9 losses (2 by KO, and 2 draws. Matta passed away at a young age and his hometown of Sassari dedicated a street to him.
