Marco Scano

Marco Scano’s real interest in boxing started after joining the Cagliari’s Associazione Pugilistica Franco Loi and, shortly afterwards in 1961, he won his first Italian title (welterweight) in the youth category. Scano, one of the most technical boxers from Sardinia, won the Guanto d’Oro (Golden Glove) in 1964 and in 1965 he was runner-up at the Italian championships and won a gold medal at the Military World Championships (CISM) in München. He won another Italian title in 1967, which led to his selection for the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first round.

Scano turned pro in February 1969 and became Italian champion on 17 February 1971, knocking out Giovanni Zampieri. On 9 April 1976, Scano became European champion, also knocking out the Brit Pat Thomas in the second round. After his competitive career ended (39 wins, 5 losses, 3 draws), Scano dedicated himself to teaching, leading successful boxers such as Olympian Andrea Mannai, Fabrizio Cappai, and the European champions Andrea Sarritzu and Salvatore Fanni.
