Away from his day job as a machinist at B&W, Kjeld Rasmussen was one of the best competitive sport shooters in Denmark. Rasmussen specialised in skeet shooting and became the 1975 European champion in the event, shooting a perfect round of 225. Later that year he was part of the Danish team that won bronze at the World Championships. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1976 Montréal Games where he tied for 14th place with seven other athletes who all scored 192 out of 200.
After his disappointment in Montréal, Rasmussen returned to the Olympics for the 1980 Games in Moskva. At the Games he was one of five shooters who had all tied on 196 points, with them then contesting a shoot-off for the medals. After the first round Rasmussen, Lars-Göran Carlsson (SWE), and Roberto Castrillo (CUB) scored the maximum of 25 points to remain in the competition. The second round shoot-off saw Rasmussen shoot another perfect round to win gold, with Carlsson scoring 24 points to win silver, one point ahead of Castrillo.
Following his retirement from competitive shooting in 1987 Rasmussen took up table tennis, competing in the sport for many years as a veteran. In 2024 he was the first person to be inducted into the Danish Shooting Union’s Hall of Fame.
