María Luisa Peña did not take up competitive shooting until she was almost 40 years old, as an activity to take part in while her husband played tennis. Within a year, she was competing at the national championships and eventually captured 10 national titles, five each in sporting and air pistols, while also representing Spain internationally. Her most notable appearance came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she placed 30th in the women’s sporting pistol event. After setting numerous records before her retirement in the late 1980s, she was recognized as a pioneer of women’s sport in Spain.
