A keen fisherman and member of his local coast guard station, Osmo Ala-Honkola also competed at three Olympic Games and three World Championships as a sports shooter. Ala-Honkola made his début at the Olympics at the 1968 Mexico City Games, finishing 19th in the 300 metres free rifle 3 positions. Two years later he won bronze in the 300 metres free rifle prone team event at the World Championships in Phoenix. He then returned to the Olympics for the 1972 München Games, but failed to improve on his previous result after finishing 25th in the same event.
Ala-Honkola continued to compete throughout the 1970s, having his best result at the 1978 World Championships in Seoul. Along with a team silver in the 300 metres free rifle prone, he also won four bronze medals in various team events.
